Have you ever been intrigued by someone but don’t know what to do about it? Well, this is one reason I love blogging. I have an outlet and a way of sharing.
I have been fascinated with Pam Durkin and her creative mind. Have you seen these phone cases and purses she has designed? She is a talented Interior Designer who decided to travel a different career path and I jumped on the opportunity to interview her. I wanted to know where she started, where she is now, and the road she plans on wandering in the future.
Pam graduated from the University of Delaware and started her career in New Jersey, working in commercial interior design on projects all over the country. In 2000, she opened up her own design firm, New Line Design, and got appointed by the governor to the Interior Design Examination Committee under the Board of Architects to work on enacting the “title act.” The title act regulates the use of the title “registered interior designer” as well as raise public awareness of the qualifications of professional interior designers in that particular state.
Being involved in ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) has always been a priority for Pam. She was on the board for ASID for a total of 6 years in New Jersey and when she moved down to Florida in 2004, she immediately got involved with the local chapter in South West Florida. I met Pam as ASID’s South West Florida’s 2010 Chapter President as I started getting more involved with ASID. INSTANT MAGNETISM TO HER AURA, TALENT, CREATIVE MIND, BUSINESS SENSE, LEADERSHIP, AND DEDICATION TO THE ARTISTIC COMMUNITY.
There are some designers that are so concerned with collaborating with other designers and fear sharing knowledge, advice, and sources with their competition. Thank goodness, one of Pam’s most featured traits is her love of other creative minds and the hunger to collaborate with others.
Pam calls herself an “Aficionado of Design”. It doesn’t matter what form of art is set in her sight line. It can be an antique fishing reel, watch, or a car and she sees the beauty. During the summer of 2009, through a twist of fate, her path crossed with a company who has a patented process on leather, allowing her to create any pattern of her choosing. From there, a line of products have begun to develop. Pamela Durkin Designs was created!!

The design of the “Tru Fire” pattern came about in collaboration with Mike Lavallee, famed flame artist, who has made his niche in the custom car market.
Beginning with furniture, of course a product she knew well, Pam used graphically interesting photography to enhance the lines and created a masterpiece. Due to price, these boutique items would only be obtainable to that special client. Next step is to make these pieces smaller and more affordable.

PD Logo Love Caribbean is a subtle basket weave pattern from a distance but the fun begins with her wonderful color combination – time to think of the soft sands of the Caribbean!
Did you know that there are 300 million cell phones sold in the United States per year? Estimated about 150 million cases sold annually in North America!! Wouldn’t you want a more dynamic, energetic, and personalized phone case rather than the standard cases everyone has? Pam jumped on this opportunity and started designing stock and custom images for cell phone cases, computer bags, and hand held electronic devices, now being sold through an on-line retailer called Keru. PB Designs’ website will be up and running in the next month and is also e-tail.

Dress up your phone like your toolbox. This Diamond Plate case is as tough as nails, and good looking too.

This one rocks! Heavy Metal has all the support you need! This design originated from windows on an apartment building.
These energetic cases were such a hit and Pam decided to test this process on a line of handbags. Low and behold, her new line of handbags offered through Pam Durkin Designs will be available on February 1st.

The outrageously pink daisy on the Crazy for Daisies case is sure to put a smile on your face every time you look at it! Available with a white or black textured background.

Poppy Love combines three classic colors in a modern way. The crisp white and black print is a perfect backdrop for those beautiful, bold red poppies!
Now instead of taking direction from a client, Pam expressed how much freedom she has creating whatever she wants, what she likes, and what will have the most impact, keeping in mind what people will buy. Pam has never done product design before and made the following revelation: “Every detail better count, don’t over-do, and refine until it is just so…The Perfect Package!!”
Oh…And I hold the secret as to what new product lines are stored in the forefront of her mind. My lips are sealed!!
